6 Clothing Items You Need in Iceland

Welcome back to the blog folks! It's been about two months since Jake and I have returned from our honeymoon to Iceland and Norway. I thought about doing this blog post because for me, knowing what to bring to wear while on vacation is a HUGE part of my planning. I get obsessive about checking the weather, I read about the weather averages for that time of year, I check almanacs, and I read other people's recommendations. I get so obsessive because I like to be comfortable while on vacation. I mean don't get me wrong, I want to look cute while being comfortable and functional. If I am too cold, too hot, or wearing uncomfortable shoes, it is generally all I can think about at the moment and just makes that time difficult to enjoy. I have learned the hard way, putting style over comfort and I paid the price. Have you ever gotten deep blisters on the pads of your feet? Well I have, and let me tell you, that was absolutely miserable trying to walk around Paris of all places with tender feet and a limp. But I digress... When planning our trip to Iceland, I did my usual weather research (plus Jake had been before) and started my search for particular clothing items. So if you are interested to know what 6 clothing items I feel are pretty standard and necessary for a trip to Iceland, then check out the list below. I will try to include links (underlined) for where you could potentially find the items or something similar to them should they be out of stock. Enjoy!

1.Warm, (mostly) waterproof jacket/coat

This jacket was a lifesaver because the weather stayed around 35 degrees, windy, and rainy the four days we were there. I actually found this on a Groupon sale but I think Amazon carries them, or something similar, here.

2.Wool socks

Because it is both cold and rainy in Iceland, some days anyway, you want to be prepared with wool socks because they dry much quicker than cotton socks, and they are super warm. Should your shoes and socks get wet, you want them to dry quicker otherwise you could cause severe blisters or skin tearing. I bought a bundle of wool socks from Amazon for our Ireland trip, and they served me well for Iceland as well.

3.Hat and gloves

So I put these under the same bullet because you can generally find sets of them together. Jake could not find his hat before we left and I could not find my gloves, so we ended up buying new ones when we got to Iceland. These gloves are very similar to the ones we bought. Beanies are pretty easy to come by but one thing I brought that I LOVED having was this wool headband that I bought from my good friend's store Brendalin & Cora. Unfortunately I think they are sold out, but I found similar ones on Amazon. My ears get cold easily so wearing my hair up when it's cold is generally a no-no but the headband saved me from that problem.

4.Waterproof, comfy boots

Here is where I was treading the line between wanting to look cute or be comfortable. I found an option that suited both. I decided on some Timberland boots, and when I found this color, I could not say no. They are a bit on the pricier side for my taste, I generally don't like to pay more than $40 for a pair of shoes but I saw these as an investment. When I need a pair of waterproof boots that are both fun and comfortable, I now have those. And they served me well! Kept me warm and they felt good walking/hiking around in. I don't think they have this exact color anymore but they have a variety of colors to choose from.

5.Layers: sweaters, sweatshirts, shirts

Another bullet with more than one item, however they all fall into the same category. Bring tons of layers! I brought a few different options of sweatshirts and sweaters that I could wear under the yellow jacket. Sometimes the weather can fluctuate and it may get warm or the temperature drops. Either way, you want to be prepared. Better to have the layers and only need to remove some rather than be freezing your bum off and wishing you had more layers. I generally had on a tank top or cami on, followed by a sweater or sweatshirt, then my jacket. I was quite comfy and cozy in all my layers.

6.Bathing suit

Why a bathing suit when it is cold enough for layers and a warm jacket? For all the hot springs! Iceland is known for all of its hot springs. We only made it to the Blue Lagoon, which was an experience in itself, but you definitely need proper swimming attire for these. They do not have to be anything fancy, just whatever you are comfortable in. I will suggest a hat or ear warmers because your head WILL be cold. Again, so glad I had that headband because it was about 35 degrees out with freezing rain coming in sideways. Thank goodness for the warm water, otherwise you'd catch me at the bar getting warm instead.

That is about all I have for today everyone. I tried to include to links to all items, most on Amazon because seriously, what doesn't Amazon have? I hope this list helps you for your future trip to Iceland. We highly recommend it, especially if you like chillier weather, being outdoors, and are seeking adventure! If you have any questions about something on the list or about Iceland in general, you can email via the blog or DM me on Instagram @roadtripwithgoose .

As they say in Iceland, sé þig seinna! Which means "see you later" :)

Goose, out.
